Old Fashioned Gingerbread - Michael Fletcher

½ cup butter                                        
½ cup sugar                                         
1 egg, beaten                                       
1 cup dark molasses                          
3 cups flour                                          
1½ tsp baking soda
½ tsp salt
½ tsp ground cloves
1 tsp ground ginger
1¼ cups boiling water

Cream butter and beat in sugar.  Add egg and molasses.  Beat until well blended.  Sift flour with soda, salt and spices.  Add alternately to creamed mixture with boiling water - beginning and ending with flour.  Pour mixture into a well greased 9x9 pan.  Bake at 350º for 45-50 minutes or until top springs back when lightly touched.
